1) A home food scale which is used to weigh food portions (common for those on weight watchers or other diet plans) is best kept parve, and thus the platform of the scale should be covered at all times, especially when being used.

Another acceptable option is for the food that is being weighed to always be wrapped. (See Be'er Heitev Yoreh Deah Siman 69:14 and Darchei Teshuva Siman 69:34)

2) It is important when lending out this scale to a neighbor that they are informed to keep it parve. (Though this is true for all utensils, many people assume it's not a problem on a scale or other similar item)

Reader's Question:

What bracha (and bracha achrona) are onion rings? (not the snack, the ones you buy in a pizza shop)

Answer:

They require a Mezonos as they are usually made with a significant batter containing Mezonos ingredients on the outside, and are thus the Ikar.

The Bracha Achrona is more tricky. If a Kzayis of the batter part is eaten within  Kdei Achilas Pras (approximately 3 minutes) it will require Al HaMichya, otherwise Borei Nefashos is recited ,provided that a Kzayis of the inside and outside combined was consumed within 3 minutes

SPECIAL DOUBLE PORTION L'KAVOD SHABBOS KODESH

Halachos for Erev Shabbos Kodesh

1) A frying pan that is used for frying eggs or other foods exclusively with oil or margarine (as opposed to butter) and is kept parve may be used to fry food which will be eaten at milk or meat meals.

2) The frying pan, however, may not come in contact with any meat or dairy items, thus it is important to remember when stirring the eggs as well as when removing them that it must be done with a parve spatula or other utensil. (See Darchei Teshuva Yoreh Deah Siman 105:60 and Chidushei Rav Akiva Eiger Yoreh Deah 105:2 regarding if a meat or dairy utensil was used.)

Halachos for Shabbos Kodesh

1) A dairy frying pan may never be used for frying meat and vice versa, even if the pan has been thoroughly cleaned and even if 24 hours have passed since its last use. (See Shulchan Aruch Siman 93 and Taz and Shach there)

2) L'Chatchila it is also best to avoid using a meat or dairy frying pan for parve foods which will be  eaten at a meal of the opposite food class, especially if the item being fried is a sharp food. (See Taz Yoreh Deah Siman 95:4 and Kaf HaChaim Siman 95:1 and 96:1. See also Ben Ish Chai Parshas Vayikra  13)

Reader's Question:

What is the din [regarding the use of] a peeler on yom tov regarding  borer etc.

Answer:

Borer on Yom Tov is a very complicated sugya.

Bottom line: A peeler is permitted to be used on Yom Tov. (See Shmiras Shabbos K'Hilchaso Perek 4:10 and footnote 16)

1) cooking ware made out of Pyrex (glass coated with special materials to make them heat resistant), for Ashenazic Jews,  are no different than  other pots/pans manufactured from stainless steel, aluminum or other metals, and all Halachos that apply to the metal pots/pans apply to them. (See Shu"t Mishna Halachos Vol. 9 Siman 268 and Shu"t Tzitz Eliezer Vol. 8 Siman 20 and Vol. 9 Siman 26)

2)Sephardic Jews are more lenient with this and allow glass cookware (and all glass utensils) to be used alternately for meat and milk as long as they were thoroughly cleaned between usages. (See Shu"t Yabia Omer Yoreh Deah Vol. 4 Siman 5, based on Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim Siman 451:26 who rules that glass is non absorbent and can be used for both Milchig and Fleishig. The Rama argues and rules that they must be kept separate and not used interchangeably. Ashkenazim rule as such and the custom is to keep separate glasses for Milchig and Fleishig. If they were used for both, they can be Koshered according to many opinions, but a Rav must be consulted for Halacha L'ma'aseh as sometimes the type of glass and the coating on it may pose some problems with koshering.)

Reader's Question:

Is it OK to read in the restroom? and if yes would the magazine like country yossi or mothers helper be ok?

Answer:

Yes, it's ok to read in the restroom, as long as Torah content isn't read.

If those magazines contain Torah, it is best to avoid bringing them into the restroom in the first place, even if those parts aren't read.

Reader's Question:

Is a kohen allowed to fly in a plane or helicopter over a jewish cemetery?

Answer:

No. If a Kohen knows for sure that he will be flying over a jewish cemetery he may not take that flight, as the impurity of a grave goes straight up until the heavens.

However, he does not have to assume that every flight path will do so, and thus doesnt need to avoid flying altogether when it isnt for sure that a jewish cemetery will be flown over.

1) Every kosher kitchen needs to have separate pots and pans for meat, dairy and parve use.

This includes the covers to the pots as well, which may not be interchanged.

It is advisable that the meat, dairy and parve pots and pans and their covers have distinct features to ensure that they aren't mixed up and inadvertently used for the wrong food class.

2) There is a minhag amongst many Jews to retain separate pots for cooking fish (This is a Chumra (stringency) based on a minority ruling. See Tur Yoreh Deah Siman  116:2)

Reader's Question:

Is it true that according to Kabbalah, the beds in one's room should face a particular direction and if so, which direction would that be?

Answer:

Yes, a person's bed should ideally be positioned in the north-south position.

According to  many  rishonim this applies only to married men and only at times when together with their wives.

If this is not possible or practical, you have on whom to rely and  the bed may be positioned any direction, even when husband and wife are together.

1)  A juicer which is used exclusively to squeeze fruits and vegetables, and is not used nor does it come in contact with meat or dairy ingredients, may be used to prepare juices for use at both meat or dairy meals.

Care must be taken to retain the parve status of this juicer and it should also be washed, dried and stored separately from other meat or dairy dishes.

2) The fruits and vegetables that will be squeezed in this parve juicer should M’Ikar Hadin not be cut or peeled with a meat or dairy knife or peeler, especially if the item being squeezed is a sharp food (such as a lemon) (See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 96:2 and 5. Reader’s Question:

Is there a source, and if so what is it, for giving gifts between Chosson and Kallah.

More specifically, if I am asked to assist a choson/kallah with wedding expenses and they say that part of the expenses is $10k in jewelry, to me that seemed absurd that they would spend so much if they don’t have the money.

The response was that in [their] circles this is the "minhag." Is there a source for this minhag or is it just keeping up with the Jones’ became the norm and then translated into the minhag.

I would not expect any source to say specifically $10k, but does it say give generously, multiple pieces, at each occasion (tu beshevat, purim) until the chasunah....?

If this was a "legitimate" expense I would be more open to supporting....

Answer:

Yes, there is definitely a well established minhag for gifts between Choson and Kallah  at the time of the engagement as well as throughout the entire period of the engagement (See Rama Even HaEzer Siman 45:1 and Magen Avraham Orach Chaim Siman 444:9

Of course, the gifts need not be extravagent or beyond the means of what can be afforded, but they should be on par to what others in their circle give/get as to not to cause any hurt feelings between the bride and groom.

As an aside, when giving these gifts it’s important when a groom sends a gift to his bride that he have in mind that it not be for the purposes of "Kidushin" and also the Choson should send them via messenger and not  hand them over himself as that is not considered  abiding with Hilchos  Tzniyus (See Rama Even HaEzer Siman 45:1 and 2. See also Shu"t Rav Eliyahu Mizrachi Siman 19 )

1) When using a parve grater, it is important to remember to not cut or peel the food that will be grated with a meat or dairy knife or peeler  prior to grating, as that will defeat the purpose of using the parve grater in the first place. (Based on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 96:1)

2) A potato masher which is used to mash hot potatoes (which due to their denseness are considered a "Davar Gush" and have a Halachic status of a Kli Rishon) together with butter, should not be used to mash potatoes that will be  used at a meat meal, especially if the two are within 24 hours of each other.

Purim...is 30 days until Pesach! And Chazal tell us to begin learning Halachos of the Chag 30 days before. Many people indeed have the custom to begin learning halachos relevant to Pesach while sitting at the Purim Seudah. For archives of Hilchos Pesach Click Here.

A FREILICHEN PURIM TO ALL OF MY READERS!!!

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ALL TEFILOS THAT ARE SINCERELY PRAYED ON PURIM ARE ANSWERED. DON'T SQUANDER AWAY THIS HOLY DAY - THE HOLIEST DAY OF THE JEWISH CALENDAR- WITH EMPTY PARTYING AND SENSELESS DRINKING CHAS V'SHALOM. LET'S ALL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS DAY AND BEG OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN TO FINALLY TAKE US OUT OF THIS LONG AND BITTER GALUS, BRING AN END TO ALL THE SUFFERING AND HERALD THE ARRIVAL OF MASHIACH!

A Reader emailed me the following and I felt it was worthwhile to share:

There is a special inyan to recite Tehillim Chapter 22 on Purim, for this is the chapter recited by Esther herself upon entering Achashveirosh's throne room uninvited (See Kav HaYashar 97).

The Kav Hayashar adds that when we gather today in Shul to daven, we are considered to be in the "Chatzar HaMelech"--and "Bevadai", surely through our Tefillos we arouse Mordechai HaTzadik and Esther HaMalka--who will "certainly join" in our Tefillos.

Accordingly, he writes, that "One who needs mercy from Hashem should recite Tehillim Chapter 22, and then pour his heart out to Hashem for the mercy he needs--especially mentioning the Zechus of Mordechai and Esther in whose Zechus the Sha'arei Rachamim should be opened and his Tefillos should be accepted."

Reader's Question #1:

Must one actually get drunk on Purim?

Answer:

Chazal have instituted that on Purim one should drink more than his usual share of wine

. According to some opinions it is a Mitzvah to actually get intoxicated on Purim.

Others maintain that  actual intoxication is not mandatory, rather one should drink until he gets tired, and falls asleep.

This is based on the words of the Talmud  (Megilah 7b) "Chayav Inish L'Besumei B'Puraya Ad D'Lo Yada Bein Arur Haman L'Baruch Mordechai- one is obligated to drink on Purim until he cannot distinguish between "cursed is Haman" and "Blessed is Mordechai".

There is a plethora of ways to understand the above Gemara,  according to Halacha and Hashkafa as well as Kaballah, and covering all of them is beyond the scope of this forum.
(For those who are interested in delving deeper into this, please start with  the following sources: Shulchan Aruch, Ram"a and Mishna Berura Siman 695, Aruch HaShulchan Siman 695:2-5,  Yad Ephraim to Shulchan Aruch ibid., MaHarsha Megilah 7b)

One thing is clearthough: If by getting drunk, one will come to be lax  in Mitzvah observance, or will Chas V'Shalom  transgress  sins (as  is unfortunately the case sometimes, as intoxication in a non Torah  environment often leads to promiscuity)   , he is forbidden from getting drunk. (Meiri  Maseches Megilah 7b quoted in the Biur Halacha), Ran ibid., Shl"a ibid., Bais Yosef Siman 695 and Chayei  Adam)

The point of drinking on Purim is to help us reach a higher level of Ahavas Hashem, loving our father in heaven. If one drinks in a manner that will bring disgrace to Hashem's name, not only has he not fulfilled the Mitzvah, he will also bear a very grave sin.

Reader's Question #2:

Where is the source that when you give Mishloach Manos it has to be 2
items with different brachas?

Answer:

There is no source in halacha that requires 2 items of different brachos. Any 2 food items, even of the same bracha are acceptable.

SPECIAL DOUBLE PORTION L'KAVOD SHABBOS KODESH

Halachos for Erev Shabbos Kodesh

1)
A sharp food that is cut on a dairy cutting surface with a meat knife- or vice versa- loses its kosher status and must be discarded and not eaten.

The knife and the cutting surface also require Koshering. (Chochmas Adam Klal 56:2. There are more lenient opinions with regard to this and in cases of necessity a Rav should be consulted.)

2) A grater which is used for dairy (e.g. to grate cheese) may not be used to grate a meat food (e.g. liver).  Likewise, a meat grater may not be used to grate dairy food.

Moreover, a meat or dairy grater may not be used to grate parve foods that will be used at a meal of the opposite food class. (See Darchei Teshuva Yoreh Deah Siman 96:14 and Kaf HaChaim Siman 96:14)

Halachos for Shabbos Kodesh

1) It is prudent that every kosher kitchen have a grater that is kept strictly parve and only used for fruits and vegetables etc., and is kept away from any meat or dairy foods.

This is especially important for grating sharp fruits/vegetables.

2) This parve grater should also be washed and stored away from meat and dairy utensils, and should especially not be in the same sink where other dishes are washed with hot water.

There is no difference what material the grater is made out of.

Dear Halacha For Today Reader,

Purim is around the corner.

The more Tzedakah you give to poor people on Purim, the more praiseworthy you are!

It is better to give additional Matanos L'Evyonim than to give extra Mishloach Manos or to increase the Seudas Purim, because ..."There is no greater or loftier Simcha than to gladden the hearts of the poor, widows, orphans and converts. One who gladdens the hearts of these downtrodden people is likened to the Shechina (!)"  (Words of the Rambam Hilchos Megilah Perek 2 Halacha 17, quoted in Mishna Berura Siman 694:3)

As I do twice yearly (Before Purim and before Rosh Hashana) I raise funds for various Talmidei Chachamim who need financial assistance. There is no greater Mitzvah than supporting Talmidei Chachamim in need. These funds will be distributed on Purim day B'Ezras Hashem.

I am posting a letter of support from HaRav Dovid Schustal Shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoha of Lakewood in regard to one of the people for whom I am raising these funds, who has unfortunately become ill and finds himself in an extremely difficult financual situation.

Please take part in this great Mitzvah and in the merit of doing so may Hashem shine His abundant blessings down upon you and your families.

Reader's Question #1:

Is 1 dollar and 50 cents ($1.50) enoUgh for Matonos L'evoyim?

Answer:

Although the Mishna Berura writes that he doesnt know the precise amount, and he quotes rishonim that a "shaveh Prutah" is  enough, the Poskim say it should be something significant for a meal.

Rav Moshe Feinstein Zatzal  said that it should be the equivalent of a roll and a coffee. $2.00 should surely cover it according to everyone.

Of course, the more  you  give the better, as the Rambam writes:

It is better to give additional Matanos L'Evyonim than to give extra Mishloach Manos or to increase the Seudas Purim, because ..."There is no greater or loftier Simcha than to gladden the hearts of the poor, widows, orphans and converts. Reader's Question: #2

I want to  mail someone a check [for Purim].  Is this counted as Tzedaka on Purim?

Answer:

If it gets there by Purim and they are able to cash it on Purim (harder this year as it's Sunday) then yes, otherwise its not acceptable for  Matanos L'Evyomnim

1) If a parve food was cut on a non parve surface and is already mixed into other food (e.g. Tomatoes were cut up and already added to a large meat or dairy salad), B'dieved, if the surface was clean and the item in question was not a sharp food, the food may be eaten.

2) If a sharp food was cut on a meat or dairy countertop or cutting board, even if cut with a parve knife, the food assumes the status of the surface on which is was cut.

Thus if the sharp food was cut on a dairy surface, it may not be eaten for six hours after eating meat.

Likewise, if the sharp food was cut on a meat surface, it may not be eaten together with dairy foods.

However, no six hours of waiting is required after eating this sharp food before eating dairy, as in regards to this particular Halacha it isn't considered real meat (i.e. it has no meaty fats and cannot get stuck in between the teeth etc.) (See Chochmas Adam Klal 56:2)

I  wanted to know if it's permitted to carry the Megila to shul [this coming] shabbos in the afternoon [ as Purim begins on  Motzei Shabbos]?

Answer:

No, carrying the Megilah to shul is prohibited, even if an eruv is present, as doing so is preparing on Shabbos for Weekday.

Rather the Megilah should be brought ot Shul on Erev Shabbos. (See Kitzur Shulchan Aruch  Siman 141:17 and Sha'arei Teshuva Siman 693:1)

1) A countertop or a cutting board that  is designated for cutting parve items may be used to cut parve food that will be used at a meat or dairy meal, as long as no meat or dairy food  is placed there and as long as the  knife used is parve.

When   sharp foods (e.g. garlic, onions, lemons, salty fish etc.) are cut on a parve countertop or cutting board, care should be taken to only use a parve knife, as using a non parve knife can negatively affect the food being cut and/or the surface that it's being cut on.

2) A countertop or cutting board that is designated for meat or dairy may not be used to cut fruits and vegetables or other parve foods that may be used at a meal with the opposite food class.

Reader's Question:

[You wrote that women may wear watches on shabbos out of the Eruv], I thought women weren't allowed to wear jewelry on Shabbos outside the Eruv (See Shulchan Aruch re: tach'shitei isha), so why would a watch be any different?

Answer:

Although in the times of the Mishna and the Talmud indeed women were prohibited from wearing most Jewelry, as we worried that they would remove it to show their friends and thus end up carrying in a prohibited place, this is not the halacha today.

There are many reasons discussed in the Rishonim and Poskim as to why the prohibition was lifted (it is already hundreds of years that this prohibition has been lifted).

Some of the reasons given are that the prohibition was only in a proper Reshus HaRabim (public domain) and not in a Karmelis (smaller public domain) and most of our streets today are not real Reshus Harabim.

Another reason given is that today's days women do not remove jewelry to show their friends in middle of the street, so the Gezeira doesn't apply.

Another reason cited is that women today  will be unable to abide by this prohibition.

Bottom line is, all Poskim agree that today's days women may wear most common jewelry on Shabbos even in areas that have no Eruv.

See Aruch Hashulchan Siman 303:21 and 22 for more on this topic.

1) A peeler (which is practically a knife) used to peel vegetables and fruit, which does not come in contact with any meat or dairy foods and is designated as Parve, may be used to peel fruits/vegetables for use at both meat and dairy meals.

This peeler should not be used to peel items that were previously cut with a meat or dairy knife. (This includes all fruits/vegetables, not just sharp items) (See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 96:1 and 2, Mishna Berura Siman 451:102. See also Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 95:6)

Likewise, it should not be used to peel vegetables/fruits that were cooked in a pot with meat or dairy foods. (This is especially true with sharp fruits/vegetables such as lemons etc. See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 95)

2) If one does have separate peelers for meat and dairy, they must be clearly marked as such, or better yet be easily differentiated by size, color etc., and kept separately as not to get confused.

Reader's Question:

I have heard conflicting views if in the snow on Shabbos, one may put a bag over his shoe so that it should slide in smoothly into his rubber boots. What can you say regarding this matter if it's a machlokes or not and what your sources are.

Answer:

Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen shlita in his Sefer The Shabbos Home Vol. 1,page 121 writes that he heard from Maran Rav Moshe Feinstein Zatzal that these arent considered garments and may not be worn outside of an Eiruv.

Rav Dovid Zucker shlita from the Chicago Kolel is quoted here as ruling that it is permitted, and that it's no different than a bag on a shtreimel or hat, where  if part of the body is  also covered, it's OK (and  Rav Moshe  Zatzal himself allows it in such a case).

I suppose that Rav Moshe Zatzal's reasoning to  differentiate between these two bags is that the bag on the shoulder can protect from rain or snow as well, whereas the bag in the boot  does not serve a purpose of protection of the body, and is only there to aid in getting the boot onto the foot, but once its on it serves no purpose.

If the boot would have a hole in it, or if the bag would otherwise serve a purpose to the body such as warmth or extra  protection from getting wet, Rav Moshe Zatzal would probably agree that it was permitted.

For Halacha L'Ma'aseh your Rav should be consulted.

1) Whenever purchasing new dishes, glasses, silverware pots or any other utensils that will come in contact with food, it must be determined if the manufacturer and/or the seller of these utensils are non Jews, as if the utensils were manufactured or owned by a non Jew they require Tevilah (immersion in a Kosher Mikvah) before being fit for use in a Kosher kitchen.

It is best to Tovel these utensils as soon as possible after purchasing them, as putting it off until a later date when they are ready to be used can often lead to mistakes and the use of these utensils without Tevilah. (Such as a sudden need for the extra dishes, or when needed on Shabbos when Tevilah isn't possible)

2) When purchasing used utensils, it must be determined who used them and in which manner, as besides for Tevilah they may also require Koshering.

We shall B'Ezras Hashem discusses more details of Hilchos Tevilas Keilim in the future.

Reader's Question:

What is the importance of the proper time of Tefilah?

Answer:

Each of the three Tefilos that we have were instituted respectively by our forefathers Avraham, Yitzchok and Yaakov (and Tefilas Musaf was instituted by Yosef Hatzadik, who is considered our forefather too in many senses)

Each of the tefilos were instituted at a different time of day, and when the time for any one  is in effect the others are not. There are many kabalistic reasons for this as well, but this is not the place for them.

The zman for Shachris is until the end of 4 hours of the day, and B'dieved it may be said until Chatzos. It is prohibited to be  recited after Chatzos (or after half hour past Chatzos according to a minority opinion)  and doing so is an Issur. If one had a circumstance beyond his control where he didnt daven shachris before the deadline, he must then daven two Shemona Esrei's at Mincha.

SPECIAL DOUBLE PORTION L'KAVOD SHABBOS KODESH

Halachos for Erev Shabbos Kodesh

1)A kosher kitchen where both meat and dairy foods are prepared must have separate cooking and serving utensils and dishes for meat and dairy.

It is praiseworthy to also have separate utensils and dishes for preparation and serving of parve foods. (See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 93:1 and Aruch HaShulchan Yoreh Deah Siman 89:16)

2) Scrupulous people also designate separate pots and pans for cooking/frying fish. (This is a Chumrah (stringency) based on a minority ruling. See Tur Yoreh Deah Siman 116:2.  See also Taz Yoreh Deah Siman 95:3. and  Mishna Berura Siman 173:3  that according to many Poskim,  today's days there is no Sakana  anymore with eating fish and meat together, so there is room for leniency in cases of necessity)

Halachos for Shabbos Kodesh

1) Dishes, utensils, etc.. for dairy. Meat and Parve should be distinctly different from each other in style, color, etc.

It's not enough to simply rely on them having separate drawers or cabinets, as it is common for them to end up in the wrong place, and if not for their uniqueness they may end up being used wrongly and lead to Kashrus problems.

This is especially important for silverware and even more important in public kitchens

2) It is especially praiseworthy to not only have separate utensils, but to actually mark them (either via engraving or with another permanent method, not simply with a sicker  or marking that will come off after  being washed a few times) with their class, so it will be evident to all  who handle it to which class it belongs.

Some people have a custom to label only the dairy utensils and then treat any other utensils or dishes that aren't marked as meat. (See Rama Yoreh Deah  end of  Siman 89 and Kaf HaChaim Yoreh Deah 89:79 and Darchei Teshuva Siman 89:54 and 55 for the reasons for this custom)

Any method of separation that is employed must be clearly understood by all who may handle the dishes.

Reader's Question:

Where can I find the halachos that are nogeia (pertinent) to Dayanim {Jewish Judges). What kind of gifts are they  allowed to accept and what kind are they not allowed to

For example: Let's say a Dayan did a Chalitza or a Get.  He doesn't want to get paid. One side insists on giving money. So can the Dayan allow that money to go towards a sefer that he is
publishing for the public's benefit?  Would this not interefere with the Dayin being able to sit on a case in the future for this donor?

What about someone who is always contributing seforim to the Dayan.  Is this permissible?

Where can I read up on the halachos of what is permissible and not in connection with a dayan?

Answer:

This is a Lav (Torah prohibition) in Parshas Mishpatim, and even the most pious dayan can-and will- be swayed by gifts, and will be unfit to judge the donors case.

See  Gemara Kesubos 105a and b, Sefer HaChinuch Mitzvah 83, Rambam Hilchos Sanhedrin perek 23, Shulchan Aruch Choshen Mishpat Siman 9.

From what you described it would seem problematic to take money for his Sefer, but a (different)  Rav must be consulted for Halacha L'ma'aseh.

1) It is especially important to have a separate and distinct Parve knife for use in cutting bread. (In many homes this is referred to as a Challah knife)

It is extremely important that this knife not be used for anything else, no matter what, especially not for hot, hard non parve food. (See Aruch HaShulchan Yoreh Deah Siman 89:16)

As well, this knife should be washed alone, not with other dishes especially if hot water is being used. This knife should also not be washed in a meat or dairy dishwasher.

2) The bread knife should be stored in a different location than other knives in the home.

Many people have a Challah Board with a special knife attached to it for use at t he Shabbos table. This is a very good idea, as it is easily recognizable and won't be used for other foods, and the knife is also stored in the board away from other knives.

Care should be taken that after the Challah is cut up, the knife should be removed from the Shabbos table.

Reader's Question:

How is davening (praying) the way to repentance?

Answer:

Teshuva is often interpreted as "repentance". Although, that's true in a sense, the actual definition of Teshuva is "Return", returning to Hashem.

When we sin we get distanced from Hashem, and that is the saddest thing that can happen to a human being, as closeness to Hashem, our Father, is the best thing for our souls.

When we do Teshuva, besides for regretting our sins and resolving to not repeat them, we must also heal the rift that we caused to happen between us and our Father in heaven.

When we daven, we are in essence talking to Hashem, and thus when done with sincerity we are becoming close to our Father again.

The closer we get, the better off we are.

1) From time to time , it is proper to thoroughly  clean out the bread box or other area where open breads and pastries are stored, as doing so will prevent anybody  from inadvertently ingesting any forbidden bugs which can often find homes in  exposed breads, yet are almost impossible to be noticed by the naked eye.

This is especially true if the bread box or shelf is located in a low area close to the ground.

2) When cleaning out a bread box, keep in mind that bread crumbs which collectively would add up to a Kzayis may not be discarded as is, and must be wrapped respectfully (e.g. in a plastic bag) before being thrown out. (See Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim Siman 171:1 and Mishna Berura S"K 9)

Reader's Question:

1) It says in Shulchan Aruch (Siman 101:4)  in the end of the sif, that according to the yesh omrim, even if one davens alone, they may ask for anything that they need except for in Aramaic. The mishna berura explains that Aramaic is seen as "disgusting in their (the angles) eyes". Number one, why is that the case?

2) why would we say yekum purkan  min shemaya (which is in aramiac) because this seems to be lower than all other languages, which is why one does not say this prayer, except when one is with the congregation. (see Shulchan Aruch). The same question for berich shemey.

Answer:

The Mishna Berura does not say because its disgusting. Rather, its because the malachim do not understand the Aramaic language (which in reality is a variation of Lashon Hakodesh) and thus will be unable to take our Tefilos  to Hashem. When we are in a Tzibbur, we don't need them to, as Hashem Himself takes our tefilos directly.

Aramaic is not a low language at all.

It is the language of the Talmud!

It is the language spoken by our great Tanaim and Amoraim!

In fact, it is the highest of our Tefilos which we specifically say in that language so they go directly  to Hashem without  the aid of any messengers.

The Talmud Megilah 3a tells us that the  Targum Onkelos, which is written in Aramaic, was given to Moshe Rabbeini on Har Sinai alongside the Torah! (The Malachim may consider Aramaic as an inferior language, but in reality it isn't)

1) A bread box or other area used to store bread and pastries should be kept parve, and one should refrain from storing any meat or dairy items there, especially dairy or meat breads (such as cheesecakes, bread with butter etc.)

The reason for this is that we worry that the breads and pastries (which are usually kept parve and used interchangeably at both classes of meals) will come in contact with the meat or dairy items and render them unfit for consumption at a meal of the opposite class, and sometimes may even come to render the bread itself un-kosher. (See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 89:4 and 91:3)

2) Leftover bread which was on the table at a meat or dairy meal, no longer has a status of parve, and should be placed in a bag and carefully marked with the status of the meal at which it was used before returning to the bread box, so as to make sure they aren't used in the future at a meal of the opposite class.

Reader's Question:

I understand that a kohen that has murdered someone can no longer Duchan; on the other hand, if a kohen mohel performs a bris on a child who subsequently dies from his injuries, that mohel can duchan.

What is the status of kohen who kills under self defense, or under the laws of Din Rodef?

Answer:

There is a dispute here between the Shulchan Aruch and the Rama regarding this.

According to the Shulchan Aruch (Siman 128:35), Kohen that killed someone unintentionally (B'Shogeg), even if he repented for this act, is disqualified from participating in Birchas Kohanim. The reason for this is that although his Teshuva is accepted (as nothing stands in the way of sincere Teshuva) it is still not proper for the same hands that caused death to be used in blessing the Jewish nation (Based on the concept of Ain Kateigor Na'aseh Saneigor. See Mishna Berura S"K 129).  Sephardic Jews  follow this ruling.

According to the Rama, if he did Teshuva on the killing, he can once again participate in Birchas Kohanim (Some authorities accept this Teshuva even for a deliberate killing, but many do not. See Mishna Berura S"K 131 and Biur Halacha Dibur Hamaschil Afilu B'Shogeg). Thus, Ashkenazic Jews  follow this ruling and allow one who killed unintentionally  and repented to once again participate in Birchas Kohanim.

The above is only regarding unintentional death (shogeg). Regarding accidental death (Oi-Nes) all agree that he is not disqualified and may continue to participate in Birchas Kohanim (See Mishna Berura  S"K 128)

Thus, for example,  if a Kohen is involved in a auto collision that results in someone's death, if he was driving safely and following all the laws, he may continue to participate in Birchas Kohanim, as it is considered Oi-Nes. If he was speeding and/or not following all the laws, a Rav should be consulted for halacha L'Ma'aseh to determine if it is considered shogeg or even Meizid (intentional).

The reason that a Kohen who performed a bris where the child died may continue to duchen, is not due to Shogeg/Oi-Ness, rather because we have no way of directly attributing the death to the Milah as it could have been caused by other reasons (See Mishna Berura 128:1323)

Killing in self defense is similar to  Oi-Ness (as the Torah does not consider this  a prohibited  action of killing) and should  not disqualify a Kohen from duchening.

For Halacha L'Ma'aseh a Rav should be consulted.

1) It is best not to store a bread box or otherwise store bread or other parve pastries on a shelf under an oven or stove, lest meat or dairy food particles will splatter or fall onto the bread and thus make it lose its parve status.

Likewise, it's best not to store breads on top of an oven or stove as the steam from the items being cooked in the oven or on the stove may reach the bread and cause it to become meat or dairy. (See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 92:8)

2) A cutting board that is designated for cutting bread should be kept away from meat and dairy foods.

Also, this cutting board should not be placed on the table and used to hold the bread during the meal, and definitely no butter or gravy should be smeared on the bread while it is on this parve cutting board.

Reader's Question:

Are spices, like garlic or onion powder considered a sharp food?

Answer:

Usually not, unless they are extraordinarily strong like vinegar. And even then,  according to many Poskim Davar Charif (sharp foods)is only a problem when it is cut with a knife, which you can't do by spices. (See Taz Siman 96:3)

Today's Halachos are dedicated by a daily reader, O.B., L'iluy Nishmas Toybeh Devorah bas Menachem Mendel who passed away on today's date, 1 Adar in the year 5736. May her Neshama continue to bask in the glow of Hashem in Olam Haba and may she be a Meilitzah Yosher for her entire family. Please have in mind when learning today's halachos that they be a merit for her Neshama.

1) If meat and dairy dishes/utensils were mistakenly washed together at one time in a dishwasher the following criteria must be determined to ascertain the kashrus of the dishwasher and the utensils.

If both of the dishes/utensils were used within the past 24 hours with hot food (Halachically referred to as Ben Yomo) and the volume of water in the dishwasher is not 60 times (i.e. Batel B'Shishim) as great as either  of the utensils, then the water , the dishes/utensils and the dishwasher  are rendered non Kosher.

2) If, however,  the dishes/utensils were not used in the past 24 hours with hot food or the volume of  water used is greater than 60 times than the dishes/utensils,  the dishes/utensils and the dishwasher retain their respective Kosher status. (See Shulchan Aruch and Rama Yoreh Deah Siman 92:1 and Chachmas Adam Klal 44:1)

Reader's Question:

Where is the source for [the custom] for someone to open the Aron Kodesh if his wife is pregnant?

Answer:

The Chida (Avodas HaKodesh;Moreh B'etzba 3:4) writes that as a Segulah for a woman to have easy labor, her husband should do Pesicha(open the ark) in the 9th month of her pregnancy.

Some people try and get as many Pesichas as possible during the 9th month, however I heard from a respected Rav in the name of the Chida that this should be done only once during the 9th month and not more times, as if one gets  many Pesichas people will realize that his wife is expecting and that is not a Hanhaga of Tzniyus to "announce"  to the entire congregation, and can actually couteract any benefits of this Segulah .

1) It is prohibited to place meat and dairy dishes together at one time in a dishwasher.

If one does so the utensils risk becoming non kosher.

Moreover, merely doing say may be a transgression of the biblical prohibition to cook milk and meat together, as if food particles of both food classes are in the dishwasher they can be heated up together. (Merely cooking meat and dairy even when not intended for consumption is prohibited) (See Igros Moshe Yoreh Deah Vol. 2 Siman 28 and 29 at length.)

2) It is best never to use one dishwasher for both meat and milk utensils, even separately and consecutively.

However, if one finds themselves in a situation where they need to use the same dishwasher for both meat and dairy utensils consecutively, there are certain conditions under which this can be done, as follows

* The dishwasher must be inspected for any food particles, and deemed thoroughly clean.

* The dishwasher may not have any parts that are constructed of ceramic or porcelain. (See Tur Yoreh Deah Siman 121 quoting the ruling of the Ba'al Ha'Itur)

* Separate racks on which the dishes will lay must be purchased and used for each food class being washed.

*Between the two washes, the dishwasher must be run with no utensils inside on the highest heat setting. (See Igros Moshe ibid. and Yoreh Deah Vol. 3 Siman 10 and 11. See also Aruch HaShulchan Yoreh Deah 121:18, Biur Halacha Siman 452 end of Dibur Hamaschil Tzarich and Chayei Adam Klal 125:32)

It is important to note that before relying on the above, a Rav must be consulted to discuss if any specific details or situations allow the above leniencies to apply or not.

Reader's Question:

What the rule about news and Lashon Hara?

I've been told that public information is not considered lashon hara, but sometimes even when I'm skimming through frum Jewish news and see some of the headlines I'm hesitant to read some of these articles due to their exaggerated, harsh language and wording.

Answer:

It is prohibited for newspapers or any other news outlets to  report Lashon Hara.

Although sometimes there is information that is already well known and indeed it may sometimes  be permissible to report that, still any additional details, embellishment of the facts, hearsay etc. that is reported, is Lashon Hara.

Frum news sources must ascertain from rabbanim that everything they report is accurate and permissible according to the Torah.

Not every news source that calls itself "frum"  is actually following halacha,  and each individual on his/her own must make sure to not read, and surely not repeat things that may be Lashon Hara, simply because it was already "printed".

Also, not everything that is reported may be believed as 100% factual truth and if necessary to know that piece of info, it must be independently verified.

SPECIAL DOUBLE PORTION L'KAVOD SHABBOS KODESH

Halachos for Erev Shabbos Kodesh

1) When purchasing an electric dishwasher for a new kitchen, if one has been blessed with the means to purchase two machines which drain into two separate sinks, one for meat and one for dairy, that is ideal and praiseworthy thing to do.

Having two dishwashers helps prevent many kashrus questions which  often arise with only one dishwasher, and affords the Balabusta (Jewish housewife) much more Menuchas Hanefesh (peace of mind)

2) However, it isn't always possible or practical to have two machines, and thus the following Halachos must be known in order to maintain a kosher kitchen with only one dishwasher.

One who purchases a home or apartment with an existing dishwasher, must ascertain whether the dishwasher is Kosher or not.

If it isn't Kosher or if it is impossible to find out from a reliable source whether it is Kosher or not, the dishwasher will require koshering before being acceptable for further use.

Halachos for Shabbos Kodesh

1) A dishwasher that was used for both meat and dairy, or which was used by previous non Jewish owners to wash utensils used with non kosher food, according to some Poskim cannot be koshered at all(especially if there is a filter in the washing chamber) and a new machine must be purchased. (See The laws of Kashrus by Rav Binyomin Forst Shlita, page 261-262 for more details)

Other Poskim maintain that koshering is possible in many instances, and  when allowed, can be koshered as follows:

* The entire dishwasher must be thoroughly cleaned

* 24 hours must be waited, and the machine not used, from when it's cleaned until it can be koshered.

* The machine should then be run [on the highest possible heat setting, if possible] for a full cycle. (See Igros Moshe Orach Chaim Vol. 3 Siman 58. If it doesnt reach a high enough temparature of 100F or more, it may be problematic.)

2) If parts of the dishwasher are porcelain, plastic or constructed from materials other than metal or stainless steel, it can further complicate the koshering process or make it impossible. (See Kovetz M'bais Leivi Vol. 1 page 30)

Whenever koshering a dishwasher , especially for Pesach use, a Rav must be consulted to determine if and how it should be done.  (See also Kitzur Shulchan Aruch Yalkut Yosef page 589 for some leniencies for Sephardim)

Reader's Question:

What is the halacha regarding bringing in a newspaper on shabbos? I don't do it, but I want confirm why. Is it because it is basically amirah l'acum since you are requesting delivery specifically for shabbos morning?

Answer:

The problem with bringing in a paper, if there is one, is that it may have come from outside the Techum of Shabbos and thus may be Muktzah.

Follow Up Question #1:

That's what I originally thought, but then I learned that mail is muktzah because there may be bills, etc., but if you see a loose magazine you can read it on Shabbos. Is this not correct? If it is correct, why isn't there a problem of Techum?

Answer:

Same problem applies to mail.

Follow Up Question #2:

So how come mail is considered muktah unless it is something that you would use as a bookmark. If there is a problem of techum it should simply be muktzah all the time...?

Answer:

Though some  Poskim are lenient, based on the Mishna Berura Siman 307:56 and maintain that even when it came from outside the Techum it isnt Muktzah, many other Poskim are stringent, based on Rav Moshe Feinstein's rulings in  Igros Moshe Orach Chaim Vol. 5 Siman 21:5 and  22:1 and 5 where he writes that the leniencies of the Mishna Berura do not apply anymore today's days (as it isn't normal to use mail for bookmarks, pot coverings etc. without specifically designating it for this purpose before Shabbos) and being that they came from out of the Techum it is Muktzah.

It is best to be stringent unless in cases of geat necessity. Of course mail that contains real Muktzah  may not be handled. And of course, it has to be determined, besides for the Muktzah issue, if the magazine/newspaper in question may be read on Shabbos in the first place.
